Dear MCG'ers.
I am pleased to say that the Collections Trust's study of the Costs of
Digitising Europe's Cultural Heritage has been published by the European
Commission and is now available for download from:
http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/activities/digital_libraries/doc
/refgroup/annexes/digiti_report.pdf
The report seeks to answer the question 'How much would it cost to
digitise everything in Europe's Museums, Archives and Libraries', and is
intended to inform the work of the Comite des Sages, the 'Council of the
Wise' formed by the European Commission to help accelerate the rate of
Digitisation and the provision of online access to digital cultural
heritage. The Comite delivered its recommendations (ironically enough,
entitled 'The New Renaissance') in January, based in part on our
economic findings. Download their report and recommendations from:
http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/activities/digital_libraries/doc
/refgroup/final_report_cds.pdf
Creating the report was a gargantuan task, and I have blogged about the
process, and what we learnt along the way at:
http://openculture.collectionstrustblogs.org.uk/
We would really love to see a public debate about these costings, and
more generally the issue of cost/benefits of Digitising collections. To
enable this, we have created a strand of our OpenCulture 2011 conference
that looks at funding Digitisation and developing the 'Killer App' for
culture, with speakers including Mia Ridge and Bill Thompson of the BBC.

Earlybird rates run until 28th Feb!
Yours sincerely,
