Reflecting on the Threshold: Liminal Dimensions in Italian Fiction, Drama and Film:
Italian literature, drama and film from Modernism to the present continues to intimate the presence of the liminal in connection to crisis or traumatic events: Pirandello, Svevo, Montale, Pavese, Bassani, Moravia, Calvino, Volponi, Eco, Manganelli, Tabucchi and a host of other writers and filmmakers, from Italo-American Jay Parini’s and Bruno Arpaia’s fictionalizations of Walter Benjamin, to Gillo Pontecorvo’s, Liliana Cavani’s, Lina Wertmüller’s and Roberto Benigni’s filimic representations of the Italian Holocaust, have challenged the aesthetic and ideological assumptions of their time by thematizing traumatic situations and events that produce the fragmented, marginalized and/or liminal Other - a person inhabiting the border between ontological orders or worlds (like Valerio Adami’s lithograph, Ritratto di Walter Benjamin), a traumatic condition existing outside hierarchical and cognitive classification. Papers are invited that draw on the motif of “threshold-crossing” and the ambiguous figures that it produces in 20th and 21st century Italian literature, drama, and film. Liminal genres and modes include, but are not limited to: supernatural fiction, science fiction narrative and film, Italian Holocaust narrative and films, historiographic meta-fiction, critical biographies, fantasy narratives, parodies, counter-factual histories, literary self-reflexive narratives, Italian detective novels (gialli), meta-drama.
