Naples Crucible of the World 2: a ?foreign? perspective
University of Naples ?Parthenope?, 3-4 June 2011
Hosted by the University of Naples ?Parthenope?, Naples Crucible of
the World 2 is the second appointment with Neapolitan culture within a
multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary discourse on the relevance of
Naples in the international panorama, after the successful conference
organized by Mariano D?Amora and held in London last October. Since
its birth as a Greek colony, Naples and the neighbouring towns have
been the theatre of subsequent invasions and rebellions, almost
invariably ended in bloodshed. This, together with the proximity to
the Mount Vesuvius, looming over the city and its population, has
contributed to the establishment of that fatalism and disillusion
characteristic of Neapolitan society. On the other hand, the Grand
Tour, which spread throughout the eighteenth century, documented
foreign intellectuals? interest, whilst creating a series of
stereotypes which sedimented throughout the centuries. What is more,
the recent uproar, involving the entire Neapolitan geographical area,
represents yet another example of the tormented and conflictual
history of this city. Notwithstanding the unresolved social and
political contrasts, which characterize the ?Parthenopean? milieu, the
richness of its heritage is a tangible testimony to the invaluable
contribution of Neapolitans, in a broad sense, to knowledge and
cultural progress. Indeed, given its multifaceted culture, this is
perhaps one of the very few cities in the world to benefit from an
adjective, ?napoletanità?, coined to describe the complex fabric of
Neapolitan society. Prominent figures in the fields of history,
philosophy, literature, figurative arts, architecture and especially
theatre and music, have been giving Naples international reputation
for centuries conjuring up a kaleidoscopic culture which is the
subject of an ongoing scholarly debate. Giambattista Vico, Benedetto
Croce, Curzio Malaparte, Matilde Serao, Anna Maria Ortese, Raffaele La
Capria, Roberto Saviano, Luca Giordano, Luigi Vanvitelli, Antonio
Caruso, Gaetano Donizzetti, Raffaele Viviani, Eduardo De Filippo,
Ruggiero Cappuccio, Vittorio De Sica, Francesco Rosi, Mario Martone
are only a limited number among those intellectuals and artists who
have contributed to raise the profile of Naples at international level
and to free Neapolitan culture from a stereotyped and parochial
representation.
This conference will explore a multitude of fields, examining
Neapolitan culture from a ?foreign? perspective, and looking at how
Naples is represented and dissected in the international community. It
will bring together scholars from different disciplines, and possible
areas for contributions are: History, Politics, Sociology, Literature,
Linguistics, Translation Studies, Music, Theatre, Cinema, Figurative
Arts and Architecture.
PROPOSALS for papers from foreign scholars are warmly invited (the
deadline is 20 March 2011). Papers are allotted 20 minutes for
presentation followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Please send your
abstract (200 words max.) stating the title of the paper, name and
