Much as I'd like to, I can't go on this tour, but
wanted to make sure other listmembers heard about
it. Please write directly to Lena Struwe,

[feel free to forward ]
Dear friends and colleagues,
In late May this year I will lead a small English-speaking group tour to
southern Sweden exploring and showcasing the nature and culture of this
gorgeous country (and I don't say that just because I was born there,
promise!). We will be exploring and experiencing everything from orchids
to birds to design, art, history, food, and geology - it is a total
interdisciplinary immersion for all senses. I have dreamed about making
a trip like this for many years, where visitors will not just see things
and places made for tourists but the real, hands-on thing.
The tour is arranged by the non-profit organization IBEX (affiliated
with Rutgers University), which promotes sustainable biodiversity
research worldwide.
If you are interested to learn more about this you can read more about
the tour and IBEX here:
http://www.bioexploration.org/Tours/sweden-orchids-overview.html
The tour is also planned to run in 2012, so let us know if you want to
be on the mailing list for that year. We are partnering with a Swedish
company specializing in ecotours, and they will provide special guides
for many of the events. Look at the brochures for the details.
I have attached two brochures , and the larger of these is also available
here [Attachments removed--Please write directly
to Lena Struwe, [log in to unmask], for
the 2 brochures]:

General Tour information:
This early summer tour will be exploring the native land of the old
Nordic seafaring traders and warriors known as the Vikings, as well as
tracing the footsteps of the world famous, 18th century naturalist Carl
Linnaeus. He was the world's first ethnobotanist and the father of
modern classification of all biodiversity. The provinces of Skåne,
Blekinge, Småland, and the island of Öland in southern Sweden are famous
for their migratory bird life, orchid meadows, sustainable living and
food culture, and immensely rich history, reaching back 10,000 years
into the Stone Age.
The area is characterized by its unique biodiversity, both living and
fossilized, and variety of ecological habitats, from sandy beaches to
limestone cliffs, meadows and wetlands, steppes, and temperate deciduous
or deep, mossy conifer forests with giant rock boulders left by the ice
age. Öland is of special importance for flora and fossils since it is
one of the few places in Scandinavia with ancient Paleozoic limestone,
which creates unique vegetation types with an extremely rich orchid flora.
These provinces are also the ancestral areas of many Swedish emigrants
who moved to USA in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The rich cultural
history includes living folklore traditions of trolls, gnomes, and
elves, old as well as modern environmentally conscious, organic farming
techniques, and innovative design and architectural development.
Local and well-made food is one of Sweden's trademarks and will be
enjoyed frequently.
We will stay at small, selected places with rich history in gorgeous
settings, such as organic farms, historic mansions, and an old pilot
station on the coast. Sweden is among the most environmentally friendly
countries in the world and many examples of sustainable
and highly developed 'green' projects will be demonstrated and visited.
This English-speaking tour fully integrates cultural and natural history
with field experiences
and includes many guided tours by local and professional experts.

May 28 - June 5, 2011
Group: 11 persons
Cost: $4,975 / person
