Unfortunately Nikon have stopped making slide scanners as there is no longer a market for them (Note the key word in the URL Rob supplied is 'discontinued'). There are now only really high-end (several 1000s or 10,000s of pounds) and really low-end (£39 advertised in the Guardian recently) ones. This is another aspect of the digital revolution and it's continuing technological change.

Flat bed scanners can work but tend not to be as quick as dedicated ones and can be lower resolution (you need at least 2400 dpi for an image that small to be enlarged to anything sensible). We had lots (about 15,000) done commercially about 7 years ago for £1 each and have just sent some more to another firm (I can get details of their prices if wanted) but we've not had the results back yet so I can't rate them.

Helen,

We have a Nikon Supercool Scan 5000 with an automatic slide feeder which holds about 50 slides. It does a very good job and allows for post processing of the images in batches - for those slides whose colour may have deteriorated, are v. dark etc.

Hello,

Another question! Does anyone have a slide scanner and if so what is it and would they recommend it?

Thanks!

From memory I am pretty sure the FOI rule is dont charge for any individial enquiry where the cost would be less than £450 - but do check out the guidelines themselves.

	Thanks Sandy.

Does FoI say that provision of individual enquiries should be less than £450 each, or that the cost of providing the service should be less than £450? No individual enquiry amounts to that much, but if I add up all the staff time spent on providing searches per annum it is several thousand pounds.

It was indicated that this limit related to each individual enquiry, rather than the provision of the service as a whole on an annual basis.
