* The Stasi Are Among Us: Experiences of Film Censorship in the GDR *
The University of Edinburgh is teaming up with Glasgow Film to present
a two-day special event at the Glasgow Film Festival, on 21 and 22
February.
The event will explore the personal experiences of four directors who
worked under the watchful gaze of the unpredictable East German
censor. Two of the directors - Rainer Simon and Hannes Schönemann -
worked for the state-run production house DEFA, while Claus Löser and
Thomas Heise were active in the underground film scene. All four
directors were subjected to prolonged Stasi surveillance and
intimidation, and Hannes Schönemann was sent to prison.
The event will include
* 6 screenings of films made in and about the GDR, introduced by
directors Thomas Heise, Hannes Schönemann, Rainer Simon, and Claus Löser
* 2 panel discussions with the directors, focusing on their personal
experiences of censorship in the GDR. Chaired by Laura Bradley and
Fiona Rintoul
* launch of Gutter magazine special issue on the GDR: readings by
Samizdat authors Johannes Jansen and Gabriele Stötzer, and Scottish
writer Fiona Rintoul (free event with wine reception)
Venue: Centre for Contemporary Arts, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow
