Call for Papers: Interdisciplinary Workshop on Teaching Theology/Religious Studies and Gender
24th May 2011, University of Leeds.
Keynote speaker: Deborah Sawyer, Lancaster University.
This workshop, organised by the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Philosophical and Religious Studies, will explore issues involved in the teaching of theology and/or religious studies (T/RS) and gender within different disciplinary settings in UK higher education. It will bring together participants from a range of academic disciplines, including post-graduates involved in teaching, and facilitate a conversation between colleagues that will:
. Shed valuable light on the variety of learning and teaching approaches used by those teaching T/RS and gender;
. Provide a space for reflection on the learning and teaching issues and challenges encountered by this diverse academic group;
. Identify differences and commonalities in the experiences of those teaching gender in different academic disciplines and in the context of different religions and/or theologies;
. Allow colleagues to showcase and share examples of good practice and to network with others working in the field, often in disciplines other than their own
Proposals are invited for papers / workshops / presentations / discussion groups related to one or more of the following:
. Teaching T/RS and gender in T/RS departments: achievements, developments, innovations, special problems / issues
. Teaching T/RS and gender in interdisciplinary contexts and / or outside of T/RS: achievements, developments, innovations, special problems / issues
. Intersectional identities - portraying gender when teaching T/RS
. The place of feminism in the teaching of T/RS
. Lecturer positionality; reflections, emotions, politics
. Incorporating LGBT topics into teaching religions and/or theologies
. Curriculum design and assessment
. Masculinities in T/RS
. Degree outcomes and employability - the place of gender theory?
This list is not exhaustive and contributions on other relevant topics related to the themes of the conference are invited. Papers with be 20 minutes in length, with a further 10 minutes for questions and discussion.

We hope to publish papers from this event on the Subject Centre's website and/or in our journal, Discourse: Learning and Teaching in Philosophical and Religious Studies. When submitting your proposal, please indicate if you would be willing to write up your paper for consideration for publication.
The deadline for proposals is 4th April 2011. The deadline for registration is 10th May 2011.
The workshop will take place at Leeds University and will be provided at no charge to those involved in teaching or studying gender and religion and/or theology, both within and outside TRS departments in UK HE. Lunch and refreshments are included. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. A £50 fee will be charged for non-attendance and for cancellations made after 10th May 2011.
