Critical disability studies at MMU aim to understand and challenge exclusionary and oppressive practices associated with disablism and consider the ways these intersect with other forms of marginalisation including hetero/sexism, racism, poverty and imperialism. This research community is currently hosted and supported by the Research Institute of Health and Social Change (RIHSC)
Our research embraces projects that are in collaboration with local people, community, voluntary, activist and human service organisations. Lived experience, participation and well-being are at the core of our research and we try to work in ways that understand both the processes and outcomes of change for people. We are also interested in embracing new theories and forms of activism that challenge disabling and ableist conditions of contemporary life at various cultural, social, political and interpersonal levels.
Research areas include Critical Policy Studies; Community Psychology; Place, Creativity and Activity; Literary and Cultural Disability Studies; Critical Disability Studies Theory; Child, Family and Disability; Self-advocacy and Disability Politics; Global Disability Studies perspectives

I am pleased to announce the release of Critical Disability Discourse, Vol. 2: https://pi.library.yorku.ca/ojs/index.php/cdd/index
If you are interested in reading Vol. 2, you can access our website with the above link. If you are interested in submitting to this year's volume, please read our call for papers posted at http://www.yorku.ca/gradcdis/documents/callforpapers101004.pdf. We would find it most helpful if you shared our call for papers with your own contacts. This year's submission deadline is March 1st, 2011.
Critical Disability Discourse (CDD) is a bilingual, interdisciplinary journal, publishing articles that focus on experiences of disability. The journal's review board consists in over thirty students and faculty members from York University, the University of Toronto, Laval University, McMaster University, and the University of Cambridge. This past year, we have been working tirelessly on our second issue, reviewing thirty articles submitted from across North America.
CDD was conceived by, and is managed entirely by, graduate students. Our objective is to create an academic space where graduate students might make valuable contributions to the field of Disability Studies. In an environment where we are pressured by the mandate to publish or perish, and yet are given very few opportunities to compete successfully for space in journals, this journal is meant to facilitate an academic community and to provide a more promising opportunity for people just beginning their careers.
Warm Regards,
