Hi there

We really are extremely keen on trying to create a schema that works with
the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, but I need to try and get a few things
clear (I'm a Blackboard person not a teacher so the way BTECs are graded
is a tad confusing!)

According to a very nice teaching colleage here, these are the grade
boundaries in points....

Unit Points

Pass grade
Merit Grade
Distinction Grade
70
80
90

Overall Grade

Grade boundaries
BTEC National Diploma
Overall grade
All units completed to pass level

PPP
1300-1339

MPP
1340-1379
MMP
1380-1419
MMM
1420-1459
DMM
1460-1499
DDM
1500-1529
DDD
1530-1559
DDD*
1560-1589
DD*D*
1590 and above
D*D*D*

....so if you have 18 units per course, the maximum a student could score
would be 90 (the points allocated for a distinction) x 18 = 1620.
Therefore 1620 would be, effectively, 100% within the schema? So we would
then need to work out proportionately the percentage values for the other
points ranges based on this fact. True or false?

Any comments/assistance would be much appreciated.

cheers

sarah

Schemas only use %
what you need to do is
A) Create a Schema
Grades between 70-100 = D | Grades entered as D calculate as 100%
Grades between 35-70 = M | Grades entered as M calculate as 66%
Grades between 0-35 = P | Grades entered as D calculate as 33%
B) Create a column and give it a max score of 9 for 30 hour or 36 for 120
or what ever the max is for that unit. Apply the Schema to the grade
column

If a lecturer for a 9 point column enters a 3 it will show as a P,
similarly if they enter a P it will show as a P and calculate as a 3.

(provided no other columns in the grade centre) your total column should
show the total points the student has achieved towards her BTEC.

If you want to be really fancy you can create a schema based on their
final
grades (DDD, DDM, DMM, MMM, MMP, MPP and PPP if I remember correctly) you
just need to find out what the top and bottom scores for all those grades
are and then convert into % for the schema - probably to much effort as
most BTEC staff seem to have the grade boundaries memorised.
