I support David's point. We do need to move anthropology beyond the academy
and see it as being of much wider importance than a mere academic
discipline. Anthropology provides perspectives on sustainable livelihoods
and their development that are increasingly valuable in all spheres of
expertise, and allow us to move beyond the constraints of an instrumental,
unilinear perspective that currently governs university thinking about cuts,
and the relevance and value of particular disciplines. Anthropology allows
us to explore what it means to be individuals in a just and interdependent
world - whatever field of work we are involved in.
It is precisely to support a wider appreciation of the importance of an
anthropological perspective, that we are organising the London Anthropology
Forum<http://anthropologytoday.ning.com/group/thelondonanthropologyforum?xg_source=activity>.
This will hopefully bring together those in the London area who are
interested in taking anthropology forward into wider networks and out of the
narrowing confines of academia in which it has become entrenched. We are
encouraging those with a wider interest in the value of anthropology to
attend and perhaps provide their perspectives on anthropology outside the
university. In doing so we want to build networks and provide support for
those seeking employment beyond universities. Through such efforts we can
enrich universities as well as provide bridges into more general efforts to
build a just and more equal world
There are a number of exciting ways in which this is already evolving
through the internet, and Anthropology Matters is a notable example (see,
also the OAC web site <http://openanthcoop.ning.com/>). There are, however,
few opportunities for 'face to face' interactions, except in rather rigid
debates within formal confines. The London Anthropology Forum is an attempt
to build a bridge between the academy and other institutions/ organisations
engaged in the evolving pursuit of more equitable and sustainable
development paths.
