2.1 Free and Open Educational Resources – a NIACE workshop organised on
15 February 2011 in partnership with ALT
A wide range of learning resources are freely available over the
internet. How can we make best use of these for adult learners? Some of
these resources have been explicitly published as “Open Educational
Resources” (OERs), and they include traditional learning materials and
also resources such as video, audio and software. To make best use of
them teachers are adopting new practices to help them locate, adapt and
adopt what they find. A 28% discount is available for ALT individual
member and for the staff of ALT organisational and sponsoring members.

initial difficulties with Donald Clark’s audio.
2.4 Build, Buy or Collaborate? An ALT/ELN webinar with Dick Moore and
Mark Berthelemy. 12.00 to 13.30 on 11 February 2011
The choice used to be simple. If you needed some elearning courseware
you would either build it yourself in-house, buy it off-the-shelf, or
have a development company build it for you. Times have changed and
elearning is no longer just courseware but a myriad of approaches and
technologies. Development tools are now easier to use than ever,
enabling more to be done in-house by small multi-skilled teams.
Development companies are embracing more collaborative approaches to
elearning design and development, allowing their clients to become part
of the team. In this webinar Dick and Mark will look at the pros and
cons of different approaches to elearning development and why you might
choose one over another. Booking form: http://tinyurl.com/5suh9y6
2.5 Lecture capture - one day event

group teaching. The lecture capture event will take place in June 2011.
Watch out for further details.

3.2 ascilite (ALT’s “sister” organisation in Australasia) opposes
closure of Australian Learning & Teaching Council (ALTC)
The Australian Federal Government to discontinue funding for the
Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) from next year - one of
a number of cuts intended to free up funding for flood-affected areas.
While ascilite recognises the great importance of rebuilding
flood-affected infrastructure, the ascilite Executive believes the
proposal to close ALTC is misguided, only saving the government Aus$22m
per year and having devastating effects for learning, teaching and
scholarship across Australian universities. Information on ALTC response

through Australian Parliament by supporting a “GetUp” campaign. Go to
