Public Health Intelligence (PHI) -
Preparing for The future
(the evidence needed for GP commissioning)
This half day meeting is part of a series of learning/professional development events on working with Health and Social Care Information and Statistics, organised by the Health Statistics User Group (HSUG).
The event is split into two parts. The first part is intended to introduce public health information and intelligence to new users:
* Why do we need public health intelligence?
* The current role of PHI at sub national and local level.
* Key tools and data sources supporting public health.
The second part will provide an opportunity to debate the future of public health intelligence following the publication of the NHS and Public Health white papers.
Participants can register for all or either part of the event.

Good health statistics on our local populations is needed to direct better commissioning. Public health Intelligence (PHI) has emerged as a new and valued career. This talk will show how PHI helps to shape better tailor-made local public health policy
13.35-14:00 "Public Health Observatories an introduction"
Liz Rolfe (South West Public Health Observatory)
An introduction to the role of Public Health Observatories in providing sub national and national public health intelligence; highlighting key areas of work and tools that have been developed for users.
14.00-14.25 "Public Health Intelligence in London PCTs"
Sylvia Godden (NHS Sutton and Merton)
This presentation will consider some of the key issues and development of an optimal analytical function for the capital.
14.25-14.50 "Developing a new public health intelligence system in the North West of England"
Jim Mechan (NHS Central Lancashire)
This presentation will consider the development of PHI in the NW, including its new role in a changing world, and the role of local team's vs. the push for national intelligence.

15.00-16.00 Discussion-"The Future of Public Health Intelligence"
Chaired by Deana Leadbeter (HSUG) with a panel of: Prof John Newton (DH); Julian Flowers (ERPHO);Jim Mechin (Head of PHI , Lancashire) and RDsPH, DsPH, (TBC).
This discussion will evaluate the implications on the provision of public health intelligence of the NHS and Public Health White papers. Each panel member will speak for 5 minutes then the floor will be opened for a discussion with all participants.
