Subject: Workshop: Analysing Patient Data using HES - York, June 2011
Dear Adam
Would you mind circulating the following advert to the EHPG mailing
list? .
It would also be appreciated if you are able to circulate this
information
(below and attached) to your colleagues and others who you think may
find it
useful.
We are offering the workshop: Analysing Patient Data using Hospital
Episode
Statistics (HES) to evaluate health care policy and practice, running
14-15
JuneRegistration and further information is online at:
http://www.york.ac.uk/che/courses/short/patient-data/ .
The Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) contains details of all admissions
to
NHS hospitals and all NHS outpatient appointments in England. HES is the
data source for a wide range of healthcare analysis for the NHS,
Government
and many other organisations and individuals. Admitted patient care data
is
available from 1989 onwards, with more than 12 million new inpatient
records
added each year. Outpatient attendance data has been collected since
2003,
with more than 40 million new records added each year.
This intensive workshop introduces participants to HES data and how to
handle and manipulate these very large data sets using computer
software. We
shall be using Stata during the workshop, as the data manipulation and
analyses we shall be performing require a powerful statistical package.
Participants will engage in problem-solving exercises, analysing the
information in highly interactive sessions.
Areas to be covered include:
. How to understand, manage and manipulate the data
. How to construct and analyse key variables such as waiting times
or
length of stay
. How to link inpatient and outpatient HES records together and to
other datasets
. How to analyse individual patient records
. How to aggregate data by hospital or general practice
. How to use the data for benchmarking and policy evaluation
The tutors for this workshop are: Chris Bojke, Silvio Daidone, Mark
Dusheiko, Rita Santos, Andrew Street and Rossella Verzulli. They have
worked extensively with HES data and will guide participants through the
potential pitfalls using case studies, practical examples and
problem-solving exercises.
