Religion, Gender and Human Rights: Challenges for Multicultural and Democratic Societies
Partial funding support available to facilitate participation by early career researchers
This multi-disciplinary conference will examine the nexus of religion, gender, identity, human rights and politics. Despite the fact that ideas about gender identity and 'women's rights' clearly underpin academic debates and popular discourses in this area (e.g. in relation to the regulation of Muslim women's dress), there is nonetheless a lack of critical indepth analysis of the gender dimensions of unfolding debates and events and their implications for how ideas of equality and human rights are understood and enacted in contemporary multicultural democracies. This conference intends to address this gap through an examination of the intersection of gender and religion in democratic societies organised around three thematic strands: Identity, representation and multiculturalism; Religious subjectivities and critiques; and Law, rights, states and politics.
Participation in the conference is by application only. Applications from young and early career researchers wishing to present posters and/or short talks related to one of the three thematic strands of the conference are encouraged. Partial funding fudning support is available to suppor the participation of early stage researchers.
