Dr Gail Hutton from RES Group, will speak on
"The applications of statistical modelling to wind farm analysis"
ABSTRACT
The energy output of a wind turbine is a function of wind speed. During both the development and construction phases of a wind farm, statistical models of the wind speeds experienced on-site are derived and used to calculate estimates of energy. As uncertainties in estimates of wind speed propagate to uncertainties in estimates of energy yield, the capability to model these well depends to some extent on the ability to form an accurate statistical model of wind climate over the longer-term. Importantly, the economic value of a wind farm depends not only on its expected energy output but also on the variance associated with that output.
The way in which wind speed and wind speed uncertainties are modelled depends on the context – for example, the method used at early stages of development differs from that used during the construction phase. An overview of both contexts will be given, followed by a more detailed example of the way in which the method used to model wind speeds experienced during a site calibration is extrapolated into the calculation of uncertainties in the estimate of the annual energy production of a wind turbine.
