TORG are pleased to announce this week's Wednesday lunchtime seminar, the first for this semester with two speakers for the price of one!
"Will the Lights Go Out When I Plug in My Electric Vehicles?"
Dr Steve McDonald, Chief Technical Officer - Emerging Technologies, National Renewable Energy Centre
And
"Regional Implications of Introducing Electric Vehicles"
Dr Colin Herron, Manufacturing & Productivity Manager, One North East
Seminar Information:
The North East region is leading the way in the research and development of Electric Vehicle technologies, and to reflect this, we have two speakers covering various aspects of the EV domain. Steve will cover the background to electric vehicles (EVs) and their potential impacts upon the electricity generation and distribution system. His talk will include reference to the ARUP/Cenex report commissioned by the government, will look at the grid implications of charging and provide an overview of approaches being adopted to accommodate EVs. Steve will also take a closer look at the network to EV interfaces and how these are evolving, with references to the Plugged in Places project in the North East.
Colin will then talk about the regional implications for introducing a technology change such as Electric Vehicles. The implications go beyond the supply of electricity to vehicles and he will also explore what the region/country is doing to address them. The talk will also cover assumptions and myths with regard to charging. Colin will cover the NE Plugged in Places project<http://www.onenortheast.co.uk/page/pluggedinplaces.cfm> and the EV User Support Charging Scheme for the NE<http://www.chargeyourcar.org.uk/>.
About the Speakers:
Dr. Steve McDonald is currently the Chief Technical Officer for Emerging Technologies, at the National Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC). NaREC is the national centre for the UK dedicated to advancing the development, demonstration, deployment and grid integration of renewable energy and low carbon generation technologies, based at offices in Blyth and Hebburn, in the North East of England.
Dr. Colin Herron began his engineering career as an apprentice tool maker in 1973, starting a 37 year association with the automotive industry. In 1987 he commenced a 17 year employment with Nissan in Sunderland, culminating in a two-year secondment to One North East, the Regional Development Agency (RDA) for the North East of England. Following this, Colin joined One North East as manager of the Best Practice Dissemination Team. Colin's current role is Manager for Manufacturing and Productivity with a primary responsibility on delivering the regional strategy on low carbon vehicles. In this role, he is responsible for the delivery of the regional Low Carbon Economic Area (LCEA) for ultra low carbon vehicles including a low carbon vehicle research and development centre; installing an electric infrastructure into the North East of England; developing a strategy for hydrogen vehicles and associated infrastructure.
Seminar Location:
Please join us on Wednesday 02/02/2011 between 13.00-15:00 in Room 2.32, 2nd Floor, Cassie Building, Claremont Road, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU.
The Cassie Building is building number 49 on the Campus Map<http://www.ncl.ac.uk/about/visit/printablemaps/map-campus.htm> and is about a 5-10 minute walk from Haymarket metro/bus interchange or Jesmond metro station, both of which are easily accessible from Newcastle Central station or Newcastle International Airport. Car parking in and around the University campus is limited, but Park and Ride options are available from seven metro stations within Newcastle - please see the Nexus website Metro Map<http://www.nexus.org.uk/sites/nexus.org.uk/files/images/metro/Metro_Map_3rd_A4.jpg> for more details.
Further information:
The TORG seminars are intended to disseminate ongoing research and encourage detailed discussions of a diverse range of transport topics in an informal environment - for further information on a specific seminar, please contact Dr. Dilum Dissanayake<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or Dr. Gareth Evans<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. The TORG seminars are part of a wider programme within the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences<http://www.ceg.ncl.ac.uk/> all of which are free of charge and open for external guests to attend. Please let Miss Emma Simblett<mailto:[log in to unmask]> know if you wish to attend a TORG seminar to allow names of external guests to be noted. After the seminar, and where suitable content is available, we try to make the presentations available online<http://www.ceg.ncl.ac.uk/seminars/index.htm>, subject to our presenters giving their permission for us to do so.
We look forward to seeing you.
