Hello,

We (St Albans Museums) have been peripherally involved in a project
which looked at the history of mental health in our district, in
particular Hill End Asylum, the old County Asylum for Hertfordshire.

The project was run by the Arts Development Officer Jo Askham,
[log in to unmask], with HLF funding. Partners included
local theatre and arts groups, archives and museums. We had a small
exhibition here at the Museum of St Albans in October 2010.

One of the outcomes of the project was a community website, currently
run by Hertfordshire Archives:

www.stalbansoutofsightoutofmind.org.u

I am happy to discuss our side of the project, but it was really
peripheral, the main focus was community engagement and arts. As a
result of some of the work we have been collecting quite a lot of
material brought in by members of the public. I would definitely be
interested in continuing this work from a collections and historical
perspective and would be interested to hear about the Yorkshire project.

I am sure Jo would also be happy to speak to someone about it so please
get in touch with her direct.

All the very best

Hello all,

One of our PhD students, Alice Brumby, is looking into the history of
mental health (from a Yorkshire perspective). We'd be interested in
hearing from any other medical museum, library or archive collection who
have done or are interested in doing work around the mental health
subject.

Please contact Almut Gruner, CEO, Thackray Museum, on 0113 2056520 or
e-mail [log in to unmask]
