*Critical Realism : Can healthcare research do without it ?
*
ABSTRACT: Healthcare research is quite sharply divided between
positivist and mainly quantitative work, and social
constructionist/interpretive mainly qualitative approaches. Each sees
serious flaws and limitations in the other's research. Critical realism
can help us to understand their deeper and common problems, and ways to
draw on their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. This session will
be a basic introduction to key ideas in critical realism, to why these
ideas matter, and how they can be applied in practice to all kinds of
healthcare research.
