Hello
I am currently
writing a thesis for my final year Graphic Design Degree where I am looking
into the influences that Social Change has on Design Practitioners to
capture and connect with Everyday Life.
I have found
many written texts about the history of Mass Observation but am interested
in finding out a bit more about why the project is still important in
today’s society.
I have a few questions as the basis for a Case Study and would appreciate any answers an opinions.
Many Thanks

When founded, the Mass Observation project was a Social Survey, which reverted attention back to the views of ordinary people instead of the representations of society by the media and political system.
Q1: How does Mass Observation use the ‘people’s history’ to define the Everyday? And why is it so important that these observations are carried out in today’s society?
With shows such as the ‘X-Factor’ invading our screens and attracting more and more viewers with their so called ‘reality persona’ it has become evident that today’s society is rapidly becoming less interested in spending time getting to know their neighbours and would rather watch the latest interview with Cheryl Tweedy.
Q2: How do you extrapolate patterns in behaviour related to the growing intrigue towards the extra-ordinary, often unrealistic influences which surround us?
Q3: How do you believe focus can be brought back on the more banal daily occurrences? Why is this important?
Our daily newspapers seem to talk about everything but the daily. Even the social pages seem to over hype situations and make them more gripping for the reader.
Q4: By looking through the Mass Observation Archives, in what different ways can we connect with the daily occurrences and encounters that are so often forgotten by the tabloids?
In a society where everything is monitored and surveyed the Mass Observation Archive could mistakenly be criticised as another way of obtaining unnecessary data.
Q5: How can the social research collected by Mass Observation effectively share daily experiences and routines?
