Dear Brian,
We are just in the early stages of implementing Aspire, but we have been
delivering our digitised readings through our reading list service ever
since the trial licence was launched.
The CLA have always said that they are happy for readings to be
delivered via reading list solutions so long as there is institutional
authentication in place and the readings are presented within a course
"silo". So our scanned readings are stored on a password protected
server so that students have to authenticate to see them (this is not
locked down to course level though - anyone with a UCL ID can log in to
see the readings). We also make it clear on the coversheet that the
readings should only be downloaded by registered students. So yes, they
can be 'discovered' by students not registered on the course, but this
is unlikely. We have been audited and the CLA were happy with our
arrangements.
One thing to note is that the CLA will require you to provide usage data
of the digitised readings if you go down the road of delivering via the
reading list system - this is so that they can reconcile the number of
students on the course with the number of hits on a particular reading
(slightly flawed approach for a number of obvious reasons). This doesn't
need to be sophisticated - we didn't have Google Analytics in place when
we were audited so presented them with a huge server log...
I'm happy to talk more if you have more questions.
Regards,
June
