Dear Colleagues,
This winter has been cold and relatively dry, the opposite of the
conditions we usually have to deal with in our library - we control
the relative humidity with a dehumidifier. But our RH has been moving
between 45 and 35 since November and I've started to notice that our
parchment and vellum bindings are showing signs of becoming too dry.
We don't have a lot of resources to control the climate; the space is
very small; and ventilation is not as dispersed as we would like,
which makes us reluctant to introduce a humidifier.
I wonder if any library has come up with a low-cost means to gently
humidify a tightly-packed closed access store with mobile shelving
that is about 8m x 6m?
Thank you for any ideas, please reply off list and I'll summarize for the list.
Best wishes,
Erica Foden-Lenahan
