From Boccaccio to Calvino: Self-Reflexion in Italian Narrative Fiction
Due to the recent deadline extension for the proposal of panels for the SIS
Biennial Conference at St Andrews, Scotland (3-9 July 2011), we would like to
encourage postgraduate students and scholars to submit abstracts for the above
panel, which aims to explore and examine the wide range, function and nature of
self-reflexive devices and techniques in Italian narrative fiction.
As we received a number of abstracts covering the Middle Ages, the Renaissance
and the Ottocento for the original CFP, we now welcome papers on the modern and
contemporary period, which examine any of the following (indicative not
exhaustive):
- Self-reflexion and theory (terminology; categories, models,
typologies; diachronic approaches; comparative
approaches)
- Self-reflexion and the Italian context (Are there specific Italian
variations of self-reflexion? Culture-specific considerations)
- Self-reflexion and genre (parody; forms that fuse fiction and literary
theory and criticism; autobiografiction)
- Self reflexive techniques (frames; narrative embedding; digression,
metalepsis; mise-en-abyme; marked intertextuality, metaphors, etc. as
expressions of self-reflexion; authorial alter-egos; dialogue with the
reader; representations of reading and writing).
Please email abstracts (200-50 words) to the panel organizers by Wednesday, 2
February: Cristina Ríos ([log in to unmask]) and Olivia Santovetti
