Archipelagos is an environmental NGO based on the beautiful Greek islands of Ikaria and Samos and aims to further the protection of the rich yet threatened marine and terrestrial environment of the Aegean Sea. Every year, a number of young scientists from a range of scientific disciplines are invited to join the activities of Archipelagos and gain work experience the hands-on way. 

For 2011, Archipelagos has planned a number of research projects that involve GIS analysis and is currently seeking enthusiastic undergraduates or recently graduated students with a fair amount of GIS experience to provide cartographic support. Previous project topics have included:

- Seagrass bed mapping based on satellite imagery and field observations
- Optimising the location selection for an artificial reef using GIS data layers
- Monitoring and analysing shipping traffic routing and intensity in the Aegean Sea
- Mapping the change in vegetation cover on overgrazed islands in the NE Aegean

Next to number of GIS assignments, volunteers are expected to assist in other projects and may be asked to help out conducting fieldwork that is organised during their placement with Archipelagos.

In order to assist with covering travel, food and accommodation expenses, successful applicants can apply to various funds. For students of EU universities or colleges, an Erasmus placement grant should be available through the international office of their organisation. Please inquire with the relevant authorities regarding funding options before applying. Placements start the first weekend of the month and typically last 3-12 months. Depending on the duration of their stay, volunteers can choose to spend one or more weeks traveling in and around Greece to explore this stunning corner or the Mediterranean.
