Papers are invited for the 2011 EMREM one-day interdisciplinary symposium, to be held at the University of Birmingham. The theme for this year’s event is ‘The Other: The monstrous, the marginal and the misunderstood from the early medieval to the early modern period’. What defined the other in the EMREM period? Who was ‘us’ and who was ‘them’? How were the marginal treated and portrayed? Whose voice could be heard? Postgraduate speakers from all fields of EMREM studies are welcome to share their research and build networks at this friendly one day symposium.
Possible topics might include, but are not limited to:
· Heresy and the heretical
· Cultural mores
· Monstrous landscapes
· Monstrous bodies
· Dreams and nightmares
· Cultural minorities
· Gender norms
· Deformity and disease
· Exclusion
· The supernatural
· Glosses and marginalia
· Misbehaviour
· Disempowered groups

There is limited funding available to cover external speakers’ travel and accommodation expenses. Refreshments and numerous networking opportunities will be provided.
