Rather a grim picture. Some list members may be able to help.
Thanks,

Subject: Restructure - Liverpool Hope University - thoughts!
Liverpool Hope University has submitted a proposal to its staff to
restructure all its student support along with a whole restructure of the
University.
There will no longer be a Counselling Service or a Medical Service and I
know not all Universities have these but Hope is a small collegiate style
University with 550 residential
students living on campus. The Counselling Service always has a waiting
list and the thoughts are that all students can go to their GP to request
Counselling and to go to the surgery if they are unwell. Our Nurse is also
involved in lots of other issues across the University which I will not
go into here.
The current Support Service for Students with Disabilities will be
disbanded, the current Team is one Head of Service on a grade 8, 2 fte
Disability Adviser's on a grade 7 and an Administrator, grade 4. The new
staffing under a student welfare team will be a Student Welfare Advisor
(disability) on a grade 7 and a Disability Advisor - dyslexia on a grade 5
with no service head. This Welfare Team will also include the Benefits
person, grade 6 and a new post of a health promotion/counsellor grade 5 .
There is no way the current level of support will be able to be continued
with this level of staffing. The HEFCE guidance on base line provision was
1 fte for every 200 disabled students, we have over 600. We are submitting
our comments during this 90 day consultation but would welcome anyone's
comments on pay scales within their institutions, it was common at one time
for Disability Advisers to be on grade 7's but I I know some institutions
have managed to recruit on lesser grades. Also any thoughts on how Teams
manage with staff on reduced weeks or term time only contracts. We are
fighting for survival here and the prospect of employment within other
institutions is bleak. The service at Liverpool Hope has worked hard over
the years to ensure all students receive the support they require and to go
back to the old days of a token ' Disability support ' person seems
unbelievable. We are ready to fight our corner, unfortunately Counselling
and Health do not appear to have a chance to fight.
We would welcome any help and advice.
Sheila
