Taylor Revisited Conference
The legacy of F.W.Taylor on the centenary of the publication of “The Principles of Scientific Management”
27th April 2011, 13:00 – 17:30
Venue: Roehampton University, 80 Roehampton Lane, London SW15 5SL (Top Floor, Duchesne Building)
“Modern life is Taylorized life... Above your desk, the clock is ticking; on the shop floor, the camera is rolling. Manage your time, waste no motion, multitask: your iPhone comes with a calendar, your car with a memo pad.” http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/atlarge/2009/10/12/091012crat_atlarge_lepore#ixzz1AvGbcRzM
This is the centenary of the publication of F.W Taylor’s “The Principles of Scientific Management” (1911) and this half-day conference will revisit Taylor’s work and look at its continued relevance within our current globalized economy. Is the ghost of Taylor still haunting factories in China and call centres in India? Can he be found nearer to home in shops, restaurants, the public sector and even in Universities? How do Taylor’s ideas permeate the way we think about management roles, the way we value “brains” and “brawn”, the way we design reward systems and jobs, the way we value “scientific knowledge” above custom and practice? Has life outside work become Taylorised, as we strive to become efficient in the way we manage housework and even our children’s activities? How do we now become “first-class” workers (the modern day Schmidts) with the right social and psychological skills to cope with the demands of our work place?
The conference is structured around two keynote talks: Professor Yiannis Gabriel and Shuchi Sinha on “The post-Fordist Deal - Taylorism with a facelift”, and Professor Phil Brown on “Digital Taylorism”.
The keynotes will be followed by three concurrent themed Round Table discussions: Back to Taylor, Work and Non-work and Job design and reward.
We are looking for short contributions to the themed Round Tables. The aim is to develop an edited book and this conference is the first stage of developing contributions.
The clock is ticking, so waste no time. Information on how to contribute and book a place appear after the Programme Outline.
