Location: John Galsworthy Building Penrhyn Road Campus
Fee: Free
Speakers:
Ludmilla Jordanova
Professor of Modern History at Kings College
Prof Jordanova will examine the term “Public History”, which covers a wide range of phenomena. So does “historical records”, which can and perhaps should include visual and material evidence from the past. She will explore how museums and galleries, even when they are not overtly historical, play a major role in the ways members of the public imagine the past through the artefacts they display and the manner in which they do so.
Prof Justin Champion
Professor of History of Early Modern Ideas at Royal Holloway
In ‘The rhetoric of the record: historical sources and public history’, Prof Champion will explore and reflect upon how public history in the media of TV and Radio presents and represents the source as a medium of authority and truth.
Dr Andrew Foster
Chair of the Historical Association Committee for Public History
Dr Foster will focus on the work of the relatively new HA Committee for Public History, how it came about and what we hope to achieve. We live in 'exciting times' for the Historical profession: threats abound yet History has probably never been so 'popular' – so how best can we ensure that History and its archives remain open and accessible to all in the new 'age of austerity.
