Preliminary panel abstract:
"Crossing and negotiating gender borders: conflicts, displacements and frictions in the everyday life of migrant women."
The social and cultural diversification caused by international migrations engenders tensions in host societies´ everyday life, sometimes generating frictions between different ethnoscapes. (Mis)matches between different socio-cultural logics create conflicts in the public and private sphere. These conflicts are related to values about family, education, sexuality, religiosity and also to the use of urban spaces. Migrant women worldwide live daily these conflicts which are also intertwined with tensions and displacements in gender identities and roles related to the crossing of national and social borders. Migration does not always imply an erosion of inequality. Some women still feel the weight of tradition -reinvented in migratory contexts- and the violence associated with it. This panel focuses on how these frictions and disagreements become manifest in migrant women's lives, implying social, religious, economical, juridical and symbolical conflicts related to gender issues. How do these women negotiate the social rules of the origin and host societies? How do they articulate, solve or face gender inequalities lived in public and private spheres? Do these conflicts and disagreements influence the way they educate their children? How do they face the social-economical-professional marginalization that they are usually exposed to?
