CEDAR Public Health Research PhD Studentships 2011

      Institute of Public Health

        Vacancy Reference No: SY07607

Limit of tenure applies*

The Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR): a UKCRC funded Centre
of Excellence in Public Health Research

PhD Studentships 2011

We invite applications for PhD studentships in public health research
within the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR), a UKCRC funded
Centre of Excellence in Public Health Research. The Centre is a
collaboration between Medical Research Council Units in Cambridge and
the Universities of Cambridge and East Anglia and is hosted by the
Institute of Public Health in Cambridge.

We particularly seek candidates interested in the social and
environmental determinants of physical activity and dietary behaviour
and in population-based, interdisciplinary intervention research in this
field. Students will be registered at the University of Cambridge or the
University of East Anglia depending on their interests. The studentships
within this multidisciplinary collaboration comprising diet and activity
research, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, behavioural
science, intervention development and evaluation provide diverse
training opportunities for all aspects of research and encourage the
development of transferable academic and generic skills.

A number of three-year ('+3?) studentships are available to commence in
October 2011. These are for students who already have a Masters degree
in epidemiology, public health, medical statistics or another relevant
health or social science. It is possible that four-year ('1+3?)
studentship(s) may also be available. If so, this would be for those
without an appropriate Masters degree who will undertake the MPhil in
Epidemiology or Public Health in Cambridge or the MRes in Environmental
Social Science in Norwich during the first year of their studentship.

The minimum academic requirement for entry is a first or upper second
class degree or equivalent. The studentships include college and
university fees and a stipend. Full funding is available to UK nationals
and UK residents. Partial funding is available to applicants from the
European Economic Area (EEA).

For further information about the Centre, the research topics and the
eligibility criteria please visit http://www.iph.cam.ac.uk/cedar/
<http://www.iph.cam.ac.uk/cedar/cedar/>. To apply, please send a copy of
your CV, a covering letter outlining the research topic(s) in which you
are interested, and contact details of two referees to Dr Rebecca
Stratford ([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>),
marking the subject line of your email "CEDAR Studentship". Applications
missing any of the above components will not be considered.

The Centre studentships are administered by the Economic and Social
Research Council (ESRC). You are strongly advised to consult the
detailed residential eligibility criteria for ESRC studentships in
paragraphs 2.36 and 2.41 and Annex 1 of the ESRC guidance notes for
applicants
<http://www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/opportunities/postgraduate/Guidance.aspx>.

* Limit of tenure: +3 studentships are available for a period of 3 years

Closing date: 30 January 2011. Planned Interview dates: Provisional
interview dates: Friday 11th March and /or Tuesday 22nd March 2011.
