Hi Karin,
This may be a useful starting point:
Symon A, Paul J, Butchart M, Carr V, Dugard P (2008) Maternity Unit
Design study Part 4: Midwives’ perceptions of staff facilities.
British Journal of Midwifery, 16(4): 228-231
It was one of a series of publications in BJM looking at various
aspects of unit design (but the only one to do so from a staff
perspective).
From the same study we had some other articles which may be of
interest:
Symon A, Paul J, Butchart M, Carr V, Dugard P (2007) Self-rated
‘no’ and ‘low’ risk pregnancy: a comparison of outcomes
for women in obstetric-led and midwife-led units in England. Birth, 34
(4): 325-332
This has just become available online:
Symon A, Dugard P, Paul J, Butchart M, Carr V. Care and Environment in
Midwife-led and Obstetric-led Units: a comparison of Mothers’ and
Birth Partners’ perceptions. Midwifery; available online January 2011
[doi: 10.1016/j.midw.2010.10.002]

Andrew Symon

Hi
I have a PhD student working on strategies to improve the practice
environment (positive practice environment, healthy work environment) of
midwives in the public sector in SA to ultimately promote quality of
care. Any suggestions re. relevant sources/research?
