Well I'm surprised - and I'm also pleased to be linked into the discussion group without having to bother about sending confirmation etc. I much prefer to receive an email on a subject I am likely to be interested in than have to logon to some other group or groups on the off chance that someone may have written something that may interest me. Emails are so easily disposed of if not wanted after all.
Please do not unsubscribe me!
Thanks

Subject: Re: The management of lis-ukeig - an explanation and an apology
When I first read this I was astounded and appalled. Had UKeiG really
been spamming people via LIS-UKeiG? On subsequent readings I became
confused more than anything else as to what had actually been going on.
Were UKeiG bypassing the normal JISCmail subscription procedure and
adding people to the list manually or by uploading a file of email
addresses? If so, then the standard checks were been circumvented
meaning that some "subscribers" may not have fully understood what an
email discussion list is. Neither will they have (I assume) received the
usual "please confirm your subscription" email, instructions on how it
works or how to unsubscribe from the list. That would account for the
numerous please-unsubscribe-me messages that hit the list just before
Christmas. The steps involved in joining an email discussion list may
seem cumbersome but they are there to prevent the situation that arose
at the end of last year.

I don't see why you should be surprised. This *is* the UK *electronic*
information group and many of us may prefer to receive announcements via
other means: Twitter, RSS feeds, the LinkedIn group, Facebook group.
Time and effort would be far better spent on ensuring that all
electronic communication channels are used and kept up to date instead
of trying to persuade people to join LIS-UKeiG.
