Most of the organisations and companies I have had dealings with give
their users and customers a *choice* when it comes to means of
communications. If all of them decided to automatically send me emails
it would not be the odd dozen or so messages a day I would have to
delete it would be hundreds. (I should emphasise that I am more than
happy to receive emails from UKeiG). There is a problem that some people
are not allowed by their organisations to subscribe to email lists and
yet *are* allowed to receive, for example, RSS feeds or to access
Twitter. Even if the only alternative were the web site, and one had to
use a page tracking service to monitor changes, that is better than
restricting all communications to a single channel that not every one
can access.
People will choose what suits them best and what is possible in their
situation when it comes to keeping up to date. I do hope that UKeiG does
not abandon the alternative communications channels it is currently
using. It will lose all credibility if it does. It is not so long ago
that there were lengthy discussions over CILIP's refusal to engage with
users and members via social media. Thankfully, that has dramatically
changed and for the better.
