The flood levels on the Brisbane River, last night, didn't go as high as
1974, the last big flood in Brisbane. The problem is more social in that
since 74 Brisbane has become an international city and many residents
have not experienced life on a flood plane, not to mention the
infrastructure of a large city.
I am about 6 hours south of Brisbane and more inland, so the flood
waters here go west. I grew up and have lived most of my life, so far,
on the river (except for 20 odd years on the Harbour in Sydney) so
floods are anticipated and in a way looked forward to. The old timers
(now in their mid 80s) are saying we are in for a big flood soon.
The SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) fell from 33 to 28 which reduced
the size of the Brisbane floods. It was 33 in 74. When this happens
under these conditions the SOI is likely to bounce back up and the rains
head south, so here we are expecting a big one. In 74 it covered my
garden to about 10 inches but didn't enter the house.
More later...
