Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to invite you to participate in a one-day meeting on 'Central Mediterranean Prehistory: current debates and new directions', to be held at Durham University on Wednesday 18th May 2011. We hope that you might either present a paper or a poster, or experience the presentations and join in with the discussions.
This meeting follows on from previous ones held at other UK, which began as a seminar series on the Italian Neolithic but now encompasses work on all aspects of Central Mediterranean Prehistory (Palaeolithic to Iron Age) being undertaken by researchers in and around UK universities (comprising staff, post-doctoral researchers, and postgraduate research students). It also builds upon the success of the Durham TAG session on 'Exploring new theories for Mediterranean prehistoric archaeology'.
The main purpose of this meeting is for us to participate in a dynamic and informal research meeting on current debates and new directions in Central Mediterranean Prehistory. However, we would also like to discuss (over lunch) the possibility of jointly applying for an AHRC Research Network grant relating to (Central) Mediterranean Prehistory.
Starting at 10.45 and finishing at around 17.00, there will be time for 9 presentations (20 minutes followed by up to 10 minutes' discussion), lunch, and - for those who can stay on afterwards - an early dinner. Arrangements will also be made for the display of posters. The meeting will be held in the Department of Archaeology, which is located on the Science Site of the University.
The meeting is being organized by myself - Robin Skeates, together with Agni Prijatelj, my research student who is currently undertaking doctoral research on the human uses of caves in the Slovenian and Trieste karst.
WE HAVE ALREADY SECURED FUNDING FOR THE MEETING FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY, SUFFICIENT TO CONTRIBUTE £60 TOWARDS THE TRAVEL COSTS OF ALL 9 SPEAKERS; and we have applied for further funding to cover the costs of the lunch.
We would be very grateful if you could let us know as soon as possible if you would like to participate in this meeting, and, in particular, if you would like to present a paper or poster. We would also appreciate it if you could forward this message to any people (research students in particular) whom you think might be interested in the meeting.
With best wishes,
Robin Skeates and Agni Prijatelj
(P.S. Apologies if you have received this message more than once.)
