ANNOUNCE 7 FULLY FUNDED PHD STUDENTSHIPS for applicants wishing to
commence a PhD in September 2011.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 5pm on Monday 21st February, with short
listed candidates to be interviewed (face-to-face or by telephone in the
case of overseas candidates) between 24th February and 21st March 2011

6 x QUEEN MARY STUDENTSHIPS:
Subject to final ratification by College, the School of Geography at
Queen Mary University of London has been awarded 6 College Studentships
covering all fees (home/EU or overseas) and a maintenance allowance of
£15,590 a year for 3 years. In addition, award holders will also receive
£600 a year from the School in the form of a Research Training Support
Grant; to help with field work, equipment, conference attendance and
other costs associated with their research. Award holders will be
expected to undertake a few hours of teaching each week through the
course of their PhD as a condition of the award.
STUDENTSHIP 1– Human Geography Open Studentship (topic to be defined by
the applicant) to be located in one of the School’s three Human
Geography research themes - Culture Space and Power; Economy,
Development and Social Justice; Health, Place and Society.
STUDENTSHIP 2 – Physical Geography Open Studentship (topic to be defined
by the applicant) to be located in one of the School’s two Physical
Geography research themes - Hydrogeomorphological and Biogeochemical
Processes; Environmental Change
STUDENTSHIP 3 – Project Defined Studentship, for applicants wishing to
develop a PhD relating to ‘The reshaping of global production networks
in the context of regional trade agreement arrangements’. To be attached
to Queen Mary’s Centre for Global Security and Development, and
co-supervised by co-supervised by Professor Adrian Smith (School of
Geography) and Dr Liam Campling (School of Business and Management).
STUDENTSHIP 4 – Project Defined Studentship, for applicants wishing to
develop a PhD relating to ‘Emotions and the Home in Modern Britain’. To
be attached to the Queen Mary/Geffrye Museum Centre for Studies of the
Home and Queen Mary Centre for the History of Emotions, and
co-supervised by staff in the School of Geography (Professor Alison
Blunt or Dr Alastair Owens), School of History (Dr Thomas Dixon, Dr
Rhodri Hayward, or Professor Amanda Vickery) and the Geffrye Museum
(Eleanor John).
STUDENTSHIP 5 – Project Defined Studentship, for applicants wishing to
develop a PhD relating to ‘Performance and the City’. To be attached to
Queen Mary’s City Centre, and co-supervised by staff in the School of
Geography (Dr David Pinder) and School of Drama (Professor Jen Harvie
and/or Dr Michael McKinnie).
STUDENTSHIP 6 – Project Defined Studentship, for applicants wishing to
develop a PhD relating to ‘Palaeoecological applications of saltmarsh
meiofauna to understanding saltmarsh development and management’. To be
co-supervised by staff in the School of Geography (Dr Dave Horne) and
School of Biological and Chemical Sciences (Dr Rob Hughes).
1 x AHRC COLLABORATIVE DOCTORAL AWARD
Project Defined Studentship, to undertake PhD research on ‘Children,
Migration and Diaspora’ as part of a wider programme of collaborative
research between the School of Geography and the V&A Museum of Childhood
on the theme ‘The Child in the World: Empire, Diaspora and Global
Citizenship’. To be supervised by Professor Alison Blunt (School of
Geography, QMUL), Dr Kiera Vaclavik (School of Languages, Linguistics
and Film, QMUL), Teresa Hare Duke (Arts Manager, Designer and Gallery
Curator, V&A Museum of Childhood) and Carolyn Chinn (Learning Manager,
V&A Museum of Childhood).
The School of Geography at Queen Mary University of London is
internationally recognized as a centre of research excellence and was
ranked joint 1st amongst UK Geography departments in the 2008 Research
Assessment Exercise. The School attracts the very best PhD candidates,
and our research students are an integral part of our research culture.
The School’s graduate cohort has grown significantly over the past
decade and we currently have some 65 graduate students, of whom 45 are
enrolled on our PhD programme. In recognition of the excellence of our
graduate training and supervision, the School has been awarded NERC
recognition, and is part of the newly established Queen Mary/Goldsmith’s
College ESRC Doctoral Training Centre. Whilst we are immensely proud of
our research achievements, we are equally proud of our deserved
reputation as one of the UK’s friendliest and most supportive Schools of
Geography.
