Sadly, Temazepam is used in NZ in hospital both by hospital midwives
and self-employed LMCs. Midwives cannot prescribe it but will get a
doctor to prescribe it. It is used for women in long latent latent who
come into hopsital for assessment and become very
dissapointed/distressed and unable to cope - which I think says more
about the practice of the midwife than it does about the women. I have
seen other 'cocktails' of drugs used as well including pethidine,
temazepam, phenergan, buscopan and panadol.
As a practising midwife I have always seen the latent phase as one of
our biggest challenges and is when the relationship and trust between
the woman and midwife through continuity of care over time really
comes to the fore. Talking about and managing expectations are
vital, keeping the woman out of the hospital is vital, using support
people is vital
Learning, Teaching and Researching latent labour is warranted.

Subject: Temazapam for latent phase of labour
Dear All.
I am interested to find out if in your place of work, or in your
experience, if Temazepam is prescribed to women who are in the early
stages of Labour, Latent phase, who are finding it difficult to relax or
sleep.
I look forward to hearing from you all on this question.
Many thanks
