Nand,

The voltage and current settings on the generator play a large role on the intensity of the x-rays. Counting statistical error is really related to total number of counts collected, both count time and tube settings effect the counts collected (as well as optics). Always have a higher tube voltage than current since the intensity of characteristic lines produced by the x-ray tube is proportional to the voltage to a power (~1.5) whereas the current is linear. You may also want to consider tube life, running at maximum power decrease tube life, since cost is more important than time for us we operate the tube at ~ 70% or maximum power, hence tubes last much longer. Additionally, on tube life minimize turning the generator on and off, typically we leave the tube on unless it will not be used for several days.

Regards,
Ed

Thank you Ed We have used a time of 10 s and we are able to detect 2% UO2 in UO2+THO2 mixture. I will contact you later if required. Will current and votage changes make some effect on results?

Thnaking you once again for your advice.

Nand,

To improve detection limits make sure your count time is at least 20 seconds (of course depends on system), I have measured to a fraction of a percent. Also make sure the beam is smaller (in the tube detector plane) than the sample width failure to do so for peaks at that particular angle can cause large errors.

Good Luck,
Ed

Hello All,
We are interested in quantitative analysis of thorium and uranium oxides
in their mixtures by XRD using Cu Ka X-ray Tube. I request advice of all
of you for better detection limit. Kindly also advise what is the probable
detection limit and precision achievable using Tube sources. Suitable
references shall be highly appreciated.

Thanking in advance.
