Sports medicine originated in ancient Greece and Rome and is generally
associated with the first Olympians.

Sports medicine uses a team approach to provide optimum care to athletic
teams. Athletic trainers are the primary providers in the field as well as
the training room for athletes on a daily basis.
Physical therapists, primary care physicians, neurologists and
neurosurgeons, as well as dentists and others, also play an important role
in the total care of the athlete, but at the end of the day it is that
relationship between the athletic trainer and the team physician that make
modern day sports medicine unique.
Sports medicine is also expanding beyond just high school, college, and
professional sports.
Individuals of all ages are participating in organized and recreational
sports now more than ever.
The sports medicine team, particularly the sports medicine physician, has
an obligation to help educate as well as prevent, diagnose and treat these
individuals in a manner that keeps them active and healthy no matter their
age, ability level or sport they chose to participate in.
