Dear Colleague
As you might know, a new law concerning the public University is about to be
definitively approved of by the Italian Parliament. Once issued, the new law
will bring about a number of consequences:
* the autonomy of the Italian Universities from the political power will be
further reduced;
* an enormous deliberative power will be given to Deans and senior, as well
as most powerful, Academicians, while the chances for shared decisions will
be significantly reduced and the current tendency to gerontocracy of the
Italian academy will be strengthened
* the management of public Universities will be opened to economic interests,
external to the institutions of knowledge, with no adequate control
measures;
* the role of junior Researcher will extinguish, turning down thousands of
scholars independent of merit and results obtained;
* Universities will not be provided with the minimal amount of human and
financial resources necessary for their survival, while additional
bureaucratic procedures will be activated that, requiring extraordinary
intervention, will draw upon the meager resources destined to research and
teaching.
All of such events will take place while promoting private schools that
performed rather poorly so far.
We ask you therefore to endorse our protest, by signing and faxing the
following text to the Italian Senate:
"High formation and science are among the primary goods of civilian
societies. I then join the request to the Members of the Italian Senate
not to support the Government by signing a law that the international
academic community holds seriously detrimental to Italy's economic and
cultural development and to its general reputation."
Please send the fax to the following number ++39 06 67062568 (it should be sent
right now and anyway within tomorrow 11.00 am CET.)
Insert in the SUBJECT the phrase: “SOS for the Italian University” and for the
RECEIVER: “Senate of the Italian Republic”.
We warmly thank you for your support
