Here is my humble view on the recent mass message issue.
As I see it the problem here isn't that people respond to a question using the list. I agree that this action is good for people to passively learn!
The problem is the back and forth banter that comes from it. Leading to around 24 messages in my inbox in 2 days.
Instead of making a new list or solely forums I suggest a bit of common sense.
If a discussion leads to more than one follow up message, then move it onto the forum by posting a link to it.
Chances are if people are following it by then that they will go to the forum too. And if its a hot topic you will usually get some followers.
When considering dropping old systems and replacing them with new ones, remember: Not all change is better just like not all movement is forwards.
