Interesting. The problem of shared virtual spaces has been one I've sought
to engage over the years. In specific pieces I tried out using simultaneous
3D visualisation of scenes simply layered one upon another as a real-time
scenario. You saw a kaleidoscope of the scene created by the multiple points
of view. When inter-actors moved the corresponding POV would move, shifting
that layer of the image.
Currently, we (Mark Shovman and Li Yi of Abertay and Andrew Roberts of
Dundee and myself) are developing a new immersive interactive piece that
employs three modalities of engagement. It will be presented in March.
One inter-actor is "within" the work, wearing a VR helmet and microphone
system whilst under an immersive magnetic tracking frame. The "world" they
inhabit is generated by their speech - words seem to come out of their mouth
as they speak and to join a larger structure of words, spoken and predicted,
that seems to envelope them. They can turn their heads to see what they are
creating but are always at the fixed centre of their "world".
The other inter-actors are also within the tracking environment but they do
not wear helmets. They are wearing 3D stereo specs and can move freely in
the space, their POV changing as a result. On a large wide screen in the
space they can see a 3D stereo projection of an avatar, of the inter-actor
who is wearing the helmet, as well as the word structure they are creating
and being enveloped by. They see the same thing as the helmet-wearer but
"objectively". The helmet wearing inter-actor is, of course, standing
amongst the other inter-actors. One of the spec wearing inter-actors also
has an air-mouse which allows them to control certain characteristics of the
third person view, such as zoom and rotation. This does not effect what the
helmet wearing inter-actor sees. The inter-actors can interact with one
another directly, in the space, and share the helmet and air-mouse.
There is also space for people to stand outside the system and simply
observe the three modes of interaction and the outcomes.
The idea is to play with the problem of the privileged point of view in
interactive 3D systems by allowing distinct kinds of engagement with the
same datasets and visualisations. In this work there is the distinct POV of
the helmet-wearing inter-actor. For the other inter-actors each has a
distinct position allowed by using stereo-specs but only one of them (with
the air-mouse) has full control of the location of the POV and the focal
characteristics of the visualisation. Then there are those outside, looking
in - but into two levels of engagement.
The use of voice recognition, with a predictive and interpretative grammar
engine, also plays with how the "speaker" (the helmet wearer) occupies a
privileged position, creating the world about them but having to navigate
the act of creation as the system seeks to predict what they are going to
say next. The other inter-actors are, in this respect, readers.
