In the 1880's according to the Mineral Statistics the tonnage of coal used in
Iron Works in counties such as Glamorganshire was pretty nearly double the
tonnage of finished iron produced. It should be possible to work out some of the
economics, as the price of coal at say Penzance (probably similar to most ports
on the south coast of Devon & Cornwall) can be obtained from mine accounts, &
probably adverts in local newspapers, while the Mineral Statistics give the cost
of coal at the pit head.
