An interesting new blog launched by Foreign Policy Magazine to offer discussion, analysis and comment on the Wiki Leaks cables. It also includes some discussion of the legal case against Wiki leaks founder J Assange.


Genocide archive Rwanda.

This site has been made possible by the financial support of the Aegis Trust. It provides free access to a wealth of primary source materials relating to the history of the genocide against the Tutsi which took place in Rwanda in 1994 held in Rwandan archives. Materials include oral history archives and transcripts (including videotapes of testimony), Gacaca Justice System court proceedings, victim identity and memorial ceremony photographs, contemporary journal and newspaper coverage of events. 

Africa Portal

is a special project of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) <http://www.cigionline.org> , Makerere University (MAK) <http://mak.ac.ug/> , and the South African Institute of International Affairs <http://www.saiia.org.za/>  (SAIIA) <http://www.saiia.org.za/> . It aims to offer a free gateway to information which would be extremely valuable for researchers of African issues. This includes a digital library of over 2,500 books, journals, and digital documents related to African policy. Some of these are published by African organisations. Topics covered include climate change, food security, conflict resolution, health, and migration, also available is an online directory of experts, and an event calendar of forthcoming conferences.

A new database launched by UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS in November 2010. It enables users to create data visualisation maps to track the progress of the disease. Indicators include statistics on rates of prevalence, medical care, spending levels and prevention programmes.
Materials can be downloaded into presentations in a variety of formats. Technical and copyright information is displayed on the website.


Biblioteca Saavedra Fajardo de pensiamento político hispánico

is a digital library created by several Spanish institutions: the University of Murcia <http://www.um.es/> , the Fundación Séneca <http://www.f-seneca.org/seneca/html/inicio.htm>  and the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación <http://www.micinn.es/portal/site/MICINN/>  (Department of Science and Innovation),it provides free access to more than 1,000 political and social philosophy titles published from the 13th-20th centuries.
It also offers some biographical background information on the collections. Items can be searched or browsed.


African-American Members of the United States Congress: 1870-2009

Latest edition of the publication from Congressional Research services which provides facts and figures on African-American political representation in the US parliament. The 66 page report includes a historical overview, some background information on the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and statistics on positions held by different ethnic groups.

Springer Real-time

an interesting site from leading publisher Springer which gives free open access to analytics about who is accessing Springer content and where. It gives a keyword tag cloud of trending topics of the last 200 articles downloaded. This is refreshed in real-time every 10 seconds. There is also a download map of where articles are being downloaded from. You can also search for a publication title and get information on the latest downloads and a graph of the last 30 days. E.g. see http://realtime.springer.com/journal/1573-3645  Main coverage (due to the scope of the publisher) is scientific materials. 

Shipping emissions.

An interesting new free database launched by Richard Branson that will list the energy efficiency of ocean-going vessels in an effort to reduce shipping emissions. It Rates over 60,000 international ships on a scale from A_G using The rating uses methodology developed by the United Nations' International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and data from the world's largest ship registry, IHS Fairplay.

Japan Air raids. Org: a bilingual historical archive.

A site created by Cary Karacas is an assistant professor in the department of Political Science, Economics, and Philosophy at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. In association with other researchers. It aims to create an online archive of documents, online film reels, and photographs relating to the bombing of Japan during the Second World War, its impact on civilians and the war. The site includes a timeline of events, plus free access to the documents. These include both American and Japanese resources.

The Encyclopaedia of the Hellenic World (EHW)

Is a free online resource co-funded from the European Union by 80% from the Hellenic State. It is maintained by the Foundation of the Hellenic World. It is divided into 3 volumes covering the Asia Minor, the Black Sea and Constantinople. Coverage is broad including the history culture and impact of the region from earliest times. Features of the site include articles, a bibliography, directory of related weblinks, and a historical interactive atlas

An interesting web 2.0 citizen generated website which is supported by the social movement We Are What We Do <http://www.wearewhatwedo.org/> , in partnership with Google. It aims to encourage users to pin their old photographs to a map and share oral histories about them across the generations. The site includes materials uploaded from social history collections such as those held by museums, galleries and newspaper archives. Copyright and technical information is displayed on the website.
