It is interesting the stories I am getting back - the overall picture appears to be that CILIP as an organisation is failing its members very badly and completely failing to recognise this fact.
There are a number of events where they have failed me (and it looks like many others).
I had a nasty regrade experience - they didn't help - it was a union I was not weven a member of at the time which took up my case and helped.
I have ME and just manage to keep working. I contacted them about three years ago asking could they start to use Web 2.0 to deliver their courses as I felt my CPD was slipping. No they could not do this.
The final straw recently has been their attitude to what is happening to services and the use of volunteers. The response to my letter in the latest magazine is appalling.
I also feel it is disingenuous to insist that we lose our chartered status if we are not members.

Subject: Re: CILIP Membership renewal
I boycotted renewing my CILIP membership because they have failed to
provide a reasonable electronic system of payment- online, BACS, or by
telephone. Printing PDFs and posting my debitcard details through my
local sorting office is not very convenient, secure or green. And it
puts CILIP through so much unnecessary paperwork they don't finish
processing until April! For years I've suggested that they employ an
information professional to spend 4-6 weeks building them a web form but
I guess they haven't found one yet. So I voted with my feet.
And you know what? Nothing Terrible has happened.
Annual Workshop/training session vouchers and free webinars might tempt
me back but I'm not holding my breath.
Given my skill set I may join the BCS at a low grade to have something
on my CV. They have some good training resources and the membership fees
are low: http://www.bcs.org/
Best wishes,
Andrea
