*Stadtkolloquium* - Interdisciplinary Urban PhD Research Seminar
Call for papers
The UCL Urban Laboratory is organizing a 2-day workshop for PhD students
who are interested in developing their work in urban research. The
workshop will provide an open and informal space to collaborate and
discuss progress amongst peers with regard to topical, theoretical,
practical or methodological concerns. We therefore welcome contributions
from PhD students at all stages of the dissertation process.
*Stadtkolloquium* aims to create a supportive environment for urban
researchers who would like to get feedback on their work and meet PhD
students from other departments and universities. All participants agree
to both present their work and support others in doing so. Organizers hope
to generate lively round-table discussions on diverse urban questions
across various academic disciplines including Geography, Architecture,
History, Anthropology, Literature, Cultural Studies, Development Studies,
Fine Arts, Environmental Studies, Gender Studies, Health Sciences,
Planning, Engineering and beyond.
The three general themes for the workshop are:
a. Urban futures
How is the urban realm imagined? What models can grasp urban complexities?
Visions for the future of cities.
b. Urban histories
How have cities been represented, imagined and contested in the past
across various realms (planning, literature, film, architecture)? Lessons
from history.
c. Urban connections
How do cities and communities build networks and collaborations? Urban
networks and systems.
*Dates - The workshop will take place on 28 & 29 March 2011 at University
College London. On the first day, each participant will be given 20
minutes to present their work in small groups, followed by 25 minutes of
feedback and discussion. The second day will be dedicated to a combined
plenary discussion building on the major concerns of the first day to
develop possible lines of future inquiry and collaboration, and to
specific methodology workshops based on participants concerns.
* Call for papers - If you are interested in discussing your work, please
send us an abstract (no more than 250 words) of the project you would like
to present (this can be your PhD outline, a sample chapter, or paper in
progress) and indicate in which of the three sessions (a., b. or c.) you
would like to present.
* Deadline for proposals: 14th of January 2011. A small conference fee may
apply.
