MUZI NKOSI (National Chair of DPSA)
Welcome from Wilfredo Guzman Jara
On May 3, 2008, persons with disabilities around the world celebrated the entry into force of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This was the culmination of nearly three decades of advocacy by DPI and our allies.
Now in the wake of this victory, DPI prepares for our 8th World Assembly, bringing together people with disabilities from around the world to celebrate our achievements, and highlight and strengthen our goals. The chosen theme for this magnificent global event is "Disability Movement United in creating a society for all through the UN Disability Convention and the Millennium Development Goals".
DPI weaves throughout its framework the relationship between the CRPD and the MDGs, the continued contribution of people with disabilities and their recognition towards the ultimate achievement of the Goals.
Disabled Peoples' International (DPI) is proud of its rich history of almost 30 years, established in 1981 and granted ECOSOC observer status soon thereafter. Our victory began a long road to equality and adopting our motto, "Nothing about us without us". Today, DPI is a global cross-disability network of 134 National Assemblies (member countries) of persons with disabilities.
The 8th World Assembly will be held October 10-13, 2011, with our brothers and sisters in South Africa.
Finally, in the excitement of our preparation we continue our mission to remain a dynamic, grassroots, human rights organization, and we welcome you to join us in our Celebration and our Victories.
In solidarity
Wilfredo Guzman Jara
