That's a pain - I would have expected AZARA compiled with BIG_ENDIAN no
need for little/big_endian or swap to work and allow varian to work.

I think your range was maybe not quite right. Assuming that 1794 is the
right number of points, then you should maybe try
range 8 1801
From what you say I would expect your data file to be
32 + ((1794 * 4 + 7 * 4) * 400) = 2881632 bytes if you ls -l it? Is that
right?
just out of interest if you use look_at in the data file what is the value
of the int and swapped:int fields for word 1?
