Seasons greetings to everyone.
I’m currently at Brighton University studying MA Information Studies and I’m writing a report on the following brief:
'You are overseeing the import of the collection into the library and you have been asked by the Director of Information Services to write a report for his management team on the key question: Should the special collection be integrated into the main library collections and use the same cataloguing, indexing and classification scheme as the university or should it be kept as a discreet entity with its own systems?'
I have visited a couple of archives both of whom use CALM.
I have to show examples in the report of how books, journals, artefacts etc are catalogued/classified/indexed. Would it be possible for someone to send me a couple of screen shots of a CALM record i.e. where an item is catalogued and then further up the hierarchical structure? (Tip of the day: The way to do this is press 'PrintScreen' and then paste into a document - this then pastes the whole screen into the document- for those that have not done this before)
Also some questions if you have time:
1. Do you follow AACR2 rules or a different metadata scheme?
2. What classification scheme do you use if any and why?
3. How are items classified e.g. spine labels and how do you protect items when classifying?
4. Do you use a controlled vocabulary/thesaurus?
5. Are cine film or videos catalogued in a different way to other artefacts?
I am a total novice when it comes to cataloguing and have been trying to get to grips with all the different standards, rules, classification, cataloguing, indexing etc., so any help is appreciated. (My deadline is Friday 7th Jan so please ignore this message after this date)
Thank you, best wishes for a creative new year,
Rosie
