Dear Colleagues,
Each year The National Archives collects information from over 200 repositories throughout the British Isles about significant manuscripts received over the past twelve months.
We use the information to update the indexes of the National Register of Archives and it is incorporated into 33 thematic digests. This information is also added to an Accessions database and is published on our website during the summer. Last year 235 repositories made returns, resulting in 3149 records being added to the accessions database.
This information provides a vital knowledge base for Archives Sector Development and is eagerly awaited by many archive users. As well as being published on The National Archives website, the exercise also allows us to monitor the transfer of public records and manorial documents. In addition, the thematic digests, as well as appearing on our website, are distributed to specialist repositories and published in academic and specialist journals. These digests cover topics including architecture, brewing, literary history, pharmacy and chemistry and women’s history.
Emails requesting information for the 2010 Survey are currently being sent out to relevant repositories and it would be helpful if replies are received by the end of January 2011.
Many thanks,
Sam Velumyl (Accessions Co-ordinator)
