Indeed. Microfilm and fiche avoids the various problems of upgrades, compatibility issues, obsolete formats, the random whims of software companies who may or may not offer support (or even exist) in the future, and of course the tendency of hard drives to degrade and fail.
Perhaps cloud computing will solve some of these issues - particularly regarding storage?

Funny that one should say this, but it's true - analogue is better. I
am involved in recording maritime history and part of my work is the
recording of buildings, shipyards, ships and boats for future
generations. For a project in the USA I tendered for last year, they
asked for photographs to be in black & white only and to be stored in
".tiff" format, or if that was not possible I was to use 4 inch by 5
inch glass plates! Yeah, like I can carry a bellows camera into a
torpedo tube!
